• Gift aid - Opportunities and pitfalls – a run through of some of the main mistakes we see as part of our work in the sector. Angela will also cover any recent changes in legislation or guidance
• VAT update – a run through of relevant changes/case law/general practice which may have an impact on the charity sector. Jim will also consider areas where we have seen opportunities to maximise recovery
• Charities (Protection and Social Investment) Act 2016: A brief overview
Stephen Claus - heads up Brabners Charity and Social Enterprise department. He advises a wide range of charities and registered housing providers on charity and related issues. He worked for the Charity Commission as a legal advisor for just under 14 years and was Head of Charity with a large Birmingham practice for two years prior to joining the firm, where he also held the post of Deputy Diocesan Registrar. Stephen was one of the original five judges appointed to the Charity Tribunal and sat as a judge part time for two years in charity law matters. He has worked back in Liverpool for 9 years now and has a national client base.
Angela Cross – is a Corporate Tax Director who leads the provision of tax services for BDO in the North to the Third Sector. Angela works with a range of clients, of varying sizes advising on corporation tax, charity tax, gift aid and stamp duty land tax. She has extensive experience in this field having worked in the sector for over 16 years.
Jim Gempton – is a VAT Director providing VAT advice to a range of Third Sector clients. Jim regularly advises charities on ensuring they are compliant and operating efficiently from a VAT perspective, maximising reliefs available. He has provided advice to the sector for over 20 years.
