Event Description

On Sunday 20th September over 1000 athletes of all ages, shapes and sizes gathered at the Mersey Ferry Terminus for this year's Liverpool Chamber of Commerce 5K Team Challenge. Amongst those taking part were teams from an unprecedented 74 local law firms, including two teams for the Liverpool Law Society staff. It seemed that everywhere you looked there were familiar faces. What was going on? Had Liverpool Lawyers decided to lead the way in corporate fitness? Were they planning alternative careers as professional athletes? Or did they just have nothing better to do on a bright Sunday morning. Whatever the reason it was a great morning.

The race was started by former Liverpool player Phil Thompson who represented Nugent Care, Liverpool Law Society's chosen charity for 2009, whose work is immense and includes care homes and special schools for hundreds of children, young people and adults. They meet the needs of vulnerable and marginalized individuals across the region.

The runners queued patiently to cross the narrow starting line. The keen runners vied for the lead while others jogged, walked and chatted. 5k is a relatively short race and it seemed that the leaders were in the home straight while some were still waiting to get going. The winner came home in just over 16 minutes and looked like he had barely broken sweat. He was probably able to do another lap. Some of the later finishers looked rather less energetic.

That was the beauty of this event. It was such a great sight watching such a diverse group of lawyers coming together to have a great time and raise money for a great charity. In fact there were a few spectators who have been inspired to get the running shoes out and prepare for next year!

Congratulations to all those who took part. The winners in the following divisional prize categories within the legal sector are as follows:

·        1st female from the legal community is Cat Oakes from Lees and Partners with a time of 23.09

·        1st male from the legal community is Matthew Smith also from Lees and Partners with a time of 16.24

·        1st legal team goes to EAD1, Sarah Armstrong, Thom Vaughan, Chris McNaughton and Greg Dudley.

·        Most money raised for Nugent Care by a legal profession team was the President’s Team, All the President’s Friends.
