Leslie Black receives Lifetime Achievement Award

The Annual General Meeting of Liverpool Law Society was held on 29 November 2011, chaired by Society President, Norman Jones.

After dealing with routine business, Norman Jones took great pleasure in making an award to Leslie Black to recognise his outstanding service and dedication to the legal profession. The award has been made by the Society on only 2 previous occasions.

In presenting the award, Mr Jones astonished Society members by pointing out that Leslie Black started working in the law some 76 years ago and has been qualified as a solicitor for 70 years. Apart from RAF service in World War II, Mr Black has worked in the law continuously since 1935. Now at the age of 95 years, Mr Black still works 3 days a week as a consultant to his firm, Black Norman Solicitors of Crosby, Liverpool.

After accepting the award, Mr Black insisted in making an impromptu speech to Society members. He paid tribute to Howard Norman the senior partner at Black Norman who, whilst many years his junior, has, he said, acted like a “Big Brother” to him.

Mr Black’s career in the law has taken him to many far away places on a regular basis including Hong Kong, The Caribbean and America. Despite this Mr Black feels that there is no better place than Liverpool in which to base a career in the law.

What everyone wanted to know was how much longer will he remain in practice? Mr Black replied by saying “That is very much in the lap of the gods”
