Lord Hunt's Visit to Liverpool

Friday, 26th June 2009, 2.00pm - 4.00pm

The Law Society arranged for an open meeting on the Legal Regulation Review chaired by Lord Hunt of Wirral to take place in Liverpool.  Liverpool Law Society was delighted to host this meeting in the Training Suite at The Cotton Exchange.

Law Society Invitation

This independent review of the regulation of law firms offers a unique opportunity to everyone involved with the provision of legal services - an opportunity to influence the new system of regulation that the Legal Services Act 2007 will usher in. The new Legal Services Board is already up and running, and has begun to consult stakeholders on the future regulatory structure. This is the perfect time to consider the substance of regulation. That is why the Law Society has commissioned former Cabinet Minister, and former senior partner of Beachcroft, Lord Hunt of Wirral (David Hunt) to undertake a far-reaching, independent review, with wide terms of reference. Rather than issuing a call for evidence and waiting for responses to roll in, Lord Hunt and his team are determined to take their message out to solicitors. This series of roadshows, sponsored by the Law Society, will give everyone with an interest in the sector an opportunity both to hear Lord Hunt talk about his review, and to ask questions and put their views directly to him and his team. This will help to ensure that every area of policy is fully considered and discussed before the final report is drafted. The report is likely to be published in or around September 2009.

Approximately 50 delegates attended the meeting.  A number of questions were asked by Lord Hunt of those present, including one where solicitors were asked to reflect on the possible regulation scenario 5 years from now.  The audience participated fully and put forward their views and also some questions to Lord Hunt.
