Description

The SRA defines competence as “the ability to perform the roles and tasks required by one’s job to the expected standard”.  Three of the four SRA competency areas for solicitors are non-technical. The highest levels of technical skills are expected and assumed by clients, therefore the non-technical competencies are often what makes the crucial difference both to clients and the performance of the firm. This online course will deliver the business skills required by 0-3 PQE solicitors to meet the SRA standards and to improve the performance of the firm.

Session 1 (16th October)

SECTION 1: Ethics, professionalism and judgement

  • The value of non-technical skills to clients and your firm.
  • How to be a ‘True Professional’.
  • What does integrity mean? How is it demonstrated?
  • Managing your learning and development. Developing competence.

SECTION 2: Managing yourself and your work (improving profitability)

  •  Understanding your impact on fees, profitability and cashflow.
  • Managing your time and personal effectiveness.
  • Developing personal confidence and the confidence of others in you.
  • Managing your career progression.
  • Dealing with change.

Session 2 – 23rd October,  also 9.30am till 12.30pm.

SECTION 3: Working with other people

 Managing and developing client relationships                 

  • The importance of recommendation and repeat clients.
  • Understanding, developing and managing client expectations.
  • Communicating effectively to achieve required results.

Working with others in your firm

  •  How teams work – how to be an effective team player.
  • Motivating other people (and yourself).
  • Delegating effectively (and responding to delegated tasks).
  • Giving and receiving feedback.
