This year’s Clinical Negligence Conference delivers a fast‑paced and comprehensive overview of the most important developments shaping the field, offering delegates clear, practical guidance across every stage of clinical negligence litigation.

The programme features James Miller of 18 St John Street Chambers with an essential update on fixed costs and hourly rates, followed by  a session on the latest developments in fatal accident claims. Chris Gutteridge of Exchange Chambers will explore evidence and proof in his session “Prove it!”, while Charlene Turner of Peak Costs provides clarity on managing Intermediate Track Costs in clinical negligence cases. Delegates will then gain unique insight from Rob Macadam in “From Operating Theatre to Court Room”, examining common themes and experiences from a general surgery expert witnesses. The day concludes with Aneurin Moloney of Gatehouse Chambers delivering a detailed legal update reviewing key decisions from 2025 and what practitioners should expect in 2026.

Speaker Biographies

Chris Gutteridge has been committed to working on behalf of seriously injured people and bereaved families for nearly two decades. He has an established track record of achieving excellent results for claimants in high-value clinical negligence claims. Chris represents claimants who have suffered catastrophic injuries as a result of medical negligence. He has a reputation for quickly “getting to the heart” of a clinical negligence claim and providing “clear and eloquent” advice. He is always happy to be involved in the earliest stages of a claim to discuss tactics, expert evidence and a claimant’s rehabilitation needs. Chris has a wealth of experience as an advocate in the King’s Bench Division. He has represented claimants at trials of breach and causation as preliminary issues as well as for assessment of damages. He is adept at cross-examination of medical experts and medical lay witnesses. He is recognised the legal directories as a “brilliant” and “extremely tough” advocate. Chris has a special interest in the engagement of vulnerable claimants in their claims for compensation. He successfully represented the claimant in the first reported case on the ‘vulnerability’ provisions in CPR PD1A: AXX v. Zajac [2022] EWHC 2463.

Mr Robert Macadam is a consultant general surgeon of 21 years standing in the NW with over 15 years of experience in medico-legal practice. He currently receives more than 50 instructions per year from both claimant and defendant solicitors, and has experience giving evidence in court and participating in joint expert meetings.  His areas of expertise include emergency general surgery, upper gastrointestinal surgery, surgical decision-making, post-operative complications, and the prevention of avoidable harm. Robert has served as a Patient Safety Specialist and Assistant Medical Director at his NHS trust and as a CQC Specialist Advisor in general surgery. He is regularly invited to lecture on medico-legal matters, including by several of the UK’s largest clinical negligence law firms and the Advancing Quality Alliance (AQUA) in the North West. He also teaches on his Trust’s education programme, delivering sessions on the prevention of avoidable harm to patients. Robert has completed expert witness training with Bond Solon and is registered with the National Expert Witness Agency. Aneurin Moloney is a clinical negligence and inquests junior at Gatehouse Chambers.  His practice is predominantly claimant based, although he is also regularly instructed on behalf of defendants, and in particular private medical practitioners.  Nye is ranked as a ‘Leading Junior’ in the Legal 500.  He has particular expertise in claims arising out of delays in the diagnosis of cancer, the management of neurological emergencies, surgical errors, and issues of informed consent.  Nye also regularly appears on behalf of families and NHS Trusts at inquests, a number of which have been reported in local and national press.

James Miller is one of very few barristers to have tripled qualified as a barrister, solicitor and costs lawyer.  He is frequently instructed in high value and complex detailed assessment hearings before Regional Costs Judges and Costs Judges in the Senior Court Costs Office. James deals with test cases, appeals and all aspects of Costs and Case Management.  He is a recognised expert in Fixed Recoverable Costs cases and regularly deals with disputes relating to misconduct and wasted costs.
