Talented trainee lawyers are invited to apply for a coveted place on the profession’s Diversity Access Scheme (DAS), the Law Society of England and Wales said as it opened recruitment for the 2018 cohort of scholars.
DAS aims to improve social mobility in the legal profession by supporting people who face exceptional social, educational, financial or personal obstacles to qualify as a solicitor. To date the scheme has supported over 200 aspiring solicitors to pursue their career ambitions.
Law Society president Joe Egan said: "I encourage any aspiring solicitor who is facing particular challenges on their way to qualification to consider applying for a place on the Diversity Access Scheme.
“To thrive, the profession needs committed solicitors from diverse backgrounds. The Law Society looks forward to welcoming up to 10 new trainees onto the scheme to support them in realising their ambitions."
In addition to financial assistance to undertake their Legal Practice Course, the scheme offers awardees relevant high-quality work experience, a professional mentor and networking opportunities.
2017 DAS scholar Helen Mead explained what the award means to her: “I wanted to say a huge thank you for believing in me and granting my DAS scholarship.
“I have secured a training contract with Hanne + Co, a firm with a passion for access to justice that I really believe holds the same values as me. I start in January 2019. Thank you for making this possible.”
Previous alumni have weathered some hugely challenging circumstances before joining the DAS programme – whether time in local authority care, escaping oppressive regimes or studying at university with severe physical disabilities.
Joe Egan concluded: "I am extremely proud of the Diversity Access Scheme and very grateful for the sponsorship and support of the profession and a range of benefactors – from law firms to schools of law.”
