Speaker Biographies

Dr John Bamford MD FRCP is an honorary Consultant Neurologist and Stroke Physician at Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust and Clinical Associate Professor at the University of Leeds who has been preparing medico-legal reports for 30 years (55% D, 45% C). He has been President of the British Association of Stroke Physicians and the North of England Neurological Association and has received the Stroke Association Lifetime Achievement award.

Chris Gutteridge has been committed to working on behalf of seriously injured people and bereaved families for nearly two decades. He has an established track record of achieving excellent results for claimants in high-value clinical negligence claims. Chris represents claimants who have suffered catastrophic injuries as a result of medical negligence. He has a reputation for quickly “getting to the heart” of a clinical negligence claim and providing “clear and eloquent” advice. He is always happy to be involved in the earliest stages of a claim to discuss tactics, expert evidence and a claimant’s rehabilitation needs. Chris has a wealth of experience as an advocate in the King’s Bench Division. He has represented claimants at trials of breach and causation as preliminary issues as well as for assessment of damages. He is adept at cross-examination of medical experts and medical lay witnesses. He is recognised the legal directories as a “brilliant” and “extremely tough” advocate. Chris has a special interest in the engagement of vulnerable claimants in their claims for compensation. He successfully represented the claimant in the first reported case on the ‘vulnerability’ provisions in CPR PD1A: AXX v. Zajac [2022] EWHC 2463.

HHJ Catherine Howells graduated from the University of Liverpool in 1988 and was called to the bar in 1989. She was a barrister at Exchange Chambers for 29 years, specialising in catastrophic injury claims and clinical negligence.  She was appointed as a civil recorder in 1998. She was appointed to be a circuit judge and has sat as the only civil circuit judge in North Wales from 2018 until October 2022. She now sits in Liverpool and Chester county court. Catherine also sits as a deputy high court judge (KB division), on circuit and in the Royal Courts of Justice. She is a civil tutor on the judicial college, providing training to full time and part time judiciary. Catherine is a civil and Court of Protection Judge in Liverpool.

Mr Robert Macadam is a consultant general surgeon of 21 years standing in the NW with over 15 years of experience in medico-legal practice. He currently receives more than 50 instructions per year from both claimant and defendant solicitors, and has experience giving evidence in court and participating in joint expert meetings.  His areas of expertise include emergency general surgery, upper gastrointestinal surgery, surgical decision-making, post-operative complications, and the prevention of avoidable harm. Robert has served as a Patient Safety Specialist and Assistant Medical Director at his NHS trust and as a CQC Specialist Advisor in general surgery. He is regularly invited to lecture on medico-legal matters, including by several of the UK’s largest clinical negligence law firms and the Advancing Quality Alliance (AQUA) in the North West. He also teaches on his Trust’s education programme, delivering sessions on the prevention of avoidable harm to patients. Robert has completed expert witness training with Bond Solon and is registered with the National Expert Witness Agency. James Miller is is one of very few barristers to have tripled qualified as a barrister, solicitor and costs lawyer.  He is frequently instructed in high value and complex detailed assessment hearings before Regional Costs Judges and Costs Judges in the Senior Court Costs Office. James deals with test cases, appeals and all aspects of Costs and Case Management.  He is a recognised expert in Fixed Recoverable Costs cases and regularly deals with disputes relating to misconduct and wasted costs.

Aneurin Moloney is a clinical negligence and inquests junior at Gatehouse Chambers.  His practice is predominantly claimant based, although he is also regularly instructed on behalf of defendants, and in particular private medical practitioners.  Nye is ranked as a ‘Leading Junior’ in the Legal 500.  He has particular expertise in claims arising out of delays in the diagnosis of cancer, the management of neurological emergencies, surgical errors, and issues of informed consent.  Nye also regularly appears on behalf of families and NHS Trusts at inquests, a number of which have been reported in local and national press.

Dr David Raw is an anaesthetist with over 20 years experience as a consultant in both the NHS and in Australia. He qualified in Oxford in 1995, and then returned to his native Liverpool where he has worked since in both clinical and senior NHS leadership roles. He has recently returned from a 3 year working sabbatical in Perth, Western Australia where he was Head of Department of the largest department in the Southern Hemisphere (managing 140 consultant anaesthetists) and Deputy Director of Clinical Services at Fiona Stanley Hospital. He has trained doctors and other healthcare professionals in human factors, has led serious incident investigations, investigated doctors of concern, been a CQC Specialist Advisor, and has a Masters in Healthcare Leadership and Quality Improvement. He has been an anaesthesia expert witness in civil claims since 2019 since completing Bond Solon training, and has received instructions from both defence and claimant teams. He has provided over 50 opinions in this time.
