This 1-hour ‘virtual’ course which will assist you in your trial advocacy.

This course will touch upon the following 12 points:

1 – The structure of a criminal trial and the Criminal Procedure Rules

2 – Hearsay issues including Res Gestae – legislation and recent case-law

3 – Bad character issues – legislation and recent case-law

4 – Hostile witnesses and hostility rulings

5 – Defendant’s Costs Orders

6 – Inconsistent statements under Section 119 of the CJA 2003 and consistent statements under Section 120 of the CJA 2003

7 – Non-appearance of the defendant at trial – should you stay or should you go?

8 – Making good use of Section 139 of the Criminal Justice Act 2003

9 – The half-time submission of no case to answer

10 – Exhibits and how to get them adduced during the trial

11 – The provision of evidence and the disclosure of unused material – the prosecution duties under common law and statue

12 – Duties upon the defendant under legislation and duties upon defendants/participants in a criminal trial concerning completion of the PET form

 

 

 

Speaker Biographies

Colin Beaumont is a solicitor in private practice, a former partner now a consultant to a major criminal law firm. He is an experienced Duty solicitor for police stations and Magistrates’ Courts, and also lectures widely in the area of criminal law. He first qualified as a barrister in 1982 and then re-qualified as a solicitor in 1996. Whilst a qualified barrister, he was a legal adviser in some 40 Magistrates’ Courts over a period of 12 years, he has been a lawyer in various guises for the past 25 years.
