Description

Join us for a thought-provoking International Men’s Day event designed specifically for those working within the legal profession. Bringing together experts in leadership, communication and workplace wellbeing, this event will explore how legal professionals can thrive under pressure, foster supportive workplace cultures and develop the skills needed to lead effectively in a demanding environment.

The programme features engaging sessions including “Setting the Tone: What Great Teams Do When the Pressure’s On”, Stephen Eccles, founder of Inner Launch, will examine why speaking up can be difficult, particularly when deadlines tighten and expectations rise. Through interactive discussion and practical exercises, delegates will explore how workplace culture influences confidence, learn techniques to help colleagues feel heard, and develop reflective listening skills that can strengthen communication and support wellbeing across teams.

The second session, “Leading a Law Firm: Lessons Learned and Tales from the Front Line”, sees Peter Jackson draw on more than two decades of law firm management experience. Having navigated many of the challenges that leaders face throughout their careers, Peter will share candid insights, practical lessons and real-life stories from the front line of legal practice. His session will explore the qualities needed to lead successfully, overcome challenges and maintain perspective in what can often be a highly pressured profession.

This event provides a valuable opportunity for legal professionals at all levels to reflect on leadership, resilience and workplace culture while marking International Men’s Day and its theme, “The Future Is Everyone.”

Setting the Tone: What Great Teams Do When the Pressure's On

When deadlines tighten and expectations rise, speaking up isn’t always easy, and many men find it harder still. How can we build the confidence to have these conversations and help others feel safe to do the same?

In line with this year’s International Men’s Day theme, “The Future Is Everyone,” Stephen Eccles, founder of Inner Launch, draws on his experience in sport, psychology and education to look at how each of us shapes the tone we set.

Through interactive activities and group discussion, the session looks at how other people’s responses affect our willingness to speak up and what helps someone feel truly heard. It also introduces reflective listening, a simple skill for responding in a way that keeps conversations open, so you leave with a practical action to support yourself and your colleagues under pressure.

Leading a Law Firm: Lessons Learned and Tales from the Front Line

Peter Jackson has been in law firm management for over 2 decades. During that period, he experienced most of the events that befall a law firm and lived to tell the tale. He will share some of his experiences of leadership and what, in his opinion, a law firm leader needs to succeed, and stay sane!

Speaker Biographies

Stephen Eccles

Stephen Eccles is the founder of Inner Launch, a consultancy specialising in performance, mindset and wellbeing.

His applied experience spans national teams, professional academies and university programmes, including GB Women’s Under-18 Ice Hockey, GB Disability Tennis, St Helens R.F.C. Academy, Sheffield Wednesday Academy and Swim England. Elite sport leaves no room for wellbeing to be an afterthought. The best organisations are learning the same lesson.

Beyond sport, Stephen partners with organisations across the legal, financial services and public and not-for-profit sectors, working with professionals whose roles demand sustained focus, sound judgement and composure under pressure. He believes that performing well and looking after each other go hand in hand, and that the tone set by each person in a team shapes how everyone copes when the pressure is on.

Drawing on this applied work and his experience as a Psychology Lecturer at Nottingham Trent University, Stephen turns evidence-based psychology into practical tools people can use straight away, whether that’s preparing for a big pitch, leading through change or recovering from a difficult quarter. His approach starts with understanding the person behind the role and adapting support to their goals, needs and ways of working.

At Liverpool Law Society’s International Men’s Day event, Stephen will draw on lessons from sport and beyond to open up a conversation about the pressures we face, the expectations we place on ourselves, and what great teams do to help everyone feel able to speak up.

Peter Jackson

A qualified solicitor by profession, Peter joined Hill Dickinson in 1983, becoming a partner in 1989. He specialised in marine and transport disputes and acted largely for cargo and liability insurers in complex, cross-border litigation.

Peter became Hill Dickinson’s Managing Partner in 2005 and the firm’s first CEO in 2016. During his time in leadership Peter grew the firm’s turnover from £30m to £141m and led several mergers and acquisitions, opening new office locations both in the UK and overseas. He also devised and masterminded the firm’s sale of its Chester office to Knights and the firm’s insurance division to Keoghs. In the years following the divestment of its insurance practice, the firm’s profitability trebled.

Stepping down as CEO in 2024, Peter then retired from the partnership in 2026.

Peter now has a professional service firm portfolio which includes the Chair role at private prosecution boutique law firm, Edmonds Marshall McMahon, a NED and consultant role at Hill Dickinson and consultancy roles at PE advisory firm Taha Capital and specialist partnership and executive employment law firm, CM Murray. He also lectures for MBL and mentors a small number of PSF executives.
