This course is suitable for partners, managing partners, senior fee earners and senior finance professionals in law firms, as well as advisers to law firms.

The session will begin by looking at the different structures commonly used by law firms, including partnerships, limited companies and LLPs, as well as other corporate hybrid structures.

It will then look at the differing taxation treatments of these structures and the availability and importance of remuneration planning under different structures.

Finally, the session will consider some of the practical and regulatory challenges of changing the legal status of a law firm (for example transferring from a partnership to Limited Company), including applications to the SRA, preparing information for the banks and dealing with other stakeholders.

Speaker Biographies

Ian is a director in the Business Advisory Group at Saffery Champness LLP, a large firm of accountants based in London.

Ian works closely with professional practices and has considerable experience in advising law firms on all aspects of financial reporting and accounting matters, including statutory accounts and audit issues. He advises on the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) Accounts Rules, financial and regulatory compliance, restructuring, internal management reporting, financial forecasting and tax compliance.

Ian’s law firm clients range in size and type, including new start-up practices, sole practitioners, traditional partnerships, highly specialised boutique practices, and large national practices.

Ian is Chair of the Executive Council with the Institute of Legal Finance and Management (ILFM), and is also a part of the ICAEW Solicitors’ Community Committee.
